Tulsa born, McLain High School grad, Emmett Shannon, joined the Army Reserves right out of high school. Three years later, wanting to align meeting family responsibilities and the selection of a career, Emmett chose active duty Army and eventually retired from the Army. During his career he deployed four times to Iraq, once as a Reservist and three as active duty. A key feature of the success of his career was his commitment to the well being of those under his command and his noteworthy “no quitting” perspective.
After his retirement he had a brief stint with the Post Office. He soon found his new career with the Veterans Administration and now serves as a Whole Health Partner. In this role he works with veterans to embrace and live out all the aspects of a fully healthy lifestyle.
As part of his work with the VA, Emmett visits the Coffee Bunker often as a teacher and in the role of peer support. Emmett adeptly helps veterans face the challenges of transitioning to civilian life, especially the encouragement to take time to take care of themselves. He helps veterans stay focused on “what is their next step.” Emmett also serves on the Bunker faculty in the training of TCC RN students who will be treatment providers to veterans.
Emmett is a true friend to veterans. We invite you to come by the Coffee Bunker and get to know him.
